High-voltage 60V/6A High-Efficiency, Compact, Low-Profile Intermediate Bus Charge Pump Module XM981A Series

Torex Semiconductor Ltd. (Tokyo Japan: President, Takeshi Kimura, TSE Prime: 6616) has developed the the XM981A Series, a compact high-voltage step-down charge pump module featuring high efficiency, saving space, and a low-profile design. The series is suitable for a wide range of applications from industrial equipment to consumer electronics.

The XM981A is a 60V operating, 6A maximum output current step-down charge pump module. The input voltage range is 20V to 60V, and the output voltage is fixed at 1/4 of the input voltage. For example, with a 48V input, a 12V intermediate bus can be directly generated. Its key feature is the ability to efficiently generate a 12V power rail from a 48V system while saving space. This enables migration from conventional 12V input systems to 48V input systems without modifying existing 12V system configurations or circuit designs (Fig. 1).

The XM981A adopts an inductor-less charge pump topology, eliminating the need for inductors required in conventional step-down DC/DC converters. This simultaneously achieves high efficiency/low loss, reduced magnetic noise, and compact/low-profile power supply design. During 48V-to-12V conversion, it achieves a high efficiency of 96.5% at 2.4A output current, enabling low-loss and low-heat operation (Fig. 2). Only input and output capacitors are required as major external components, contributing to reduced design workload.

The XM981A also supports parallel operation, allowing connection of up to four devices. With a maximum output current of 6A per device, up to 24A output is achievable in a four-parallel configuration, enabling flexible current scaling according to application requirements (Fig. 3). The package adopts the compact, low-profile LGA-52C01 (9.5 × 11.5 × 2.1 mm) (Fig. 4), making it ideal for industrial and communication equipment requiring high-density mounting and saving space.
